National Book Lovers Day – Exploring Genres

Fantasy: Magic & Myth

Fantasy is your golden ticket to realms where magic is real, dragons soar the skies, and heroes embark on epic quests. You can’t help but imagine castles, enchanted forests, and mystical creatures galore.

Science Fiction: Space & Beyond

Sci-fi catapults you into futuristic adventures filled with advanced technology, alien civilizations, and interstellar travel. It's all about exploring the possibilities of what could be—is there life out there?

Historical Fiction: Time Travel

Historical fiction is like having a time machine that drops you into the past, from ancient civilizations to 20th-century wartime dramas (from the comfort of your couch!). These novels bring history to life with rich details and compelling characters.

Mystery: Whodunit?

Mystery novels are your personal detective kits. We love following and “helping” those clever sleuths as they piece together clues, uncover secrets, and solve crimes. It's all about suspense, intrigue, and the ultimate reveal—those moments where you’re either gasping, “I can’t believe it!” or “I knew it!”

Thriller: Heart-Pounding Adventures

Thrillers keep you on the edge of your seat with high-stakes drama, unexpected twists, and adrenaline-pumping action. It's like a literary roller coaster ride—you want to turn the page, but you don’t want to turn the page, and it’s funny how normal sounds can make your heart stop for a split second!

Romance: Love & Longing

Romance novels are all about the heart-fluttering, swoon-worthy moments of falling in love. They are filled with passionate kisses, dramatic misunderstandings, and happily-ever-afters. After all, love makes the world go around!

Horror: Spooky Spines

Horror is the genre for those who love a good scare. Haunted houses, supernatural entities, and spine-chilling suspense are the order of the day. Yes, it’s definitely a ‘sleeping with a night light on’ kind of book, and our moon book light is the perfect option!

Young Adult (YA): Coming of Age

YA fiction captures the essence of growing up with stories that tackle first loves, friendships, identity struggles, and the journey to self-discovery. We love them because they are relatable, emotional, and often packed with humor. Make sure to check out our blog Are YA Books Just Junk Food For Adults Or Do They Have Just As Much Merit?

Adventure: Thrill Seeker's Paradise

Adventure novels are all about action, exploration, and daring exploits. Who doesn’t love a great treasure hunt with uncharted territories and heroic feats?

Which genre is sticking out for your BLD theme? Murder? Thriller? Horror? Romance? Or you could even go for YA romantasy – how’s that for combining!

Celebrating Book Lovers Day

Book Lovers Day falls on a Friday this year, and just because you have to work doesn't mean you can't still live your lit life. Here are some fantastic ways to incorporate Book Lovers Day, whether you’re at work or at home. A little prep beforehand is all you need!

Book Lovers Food (Every Celebration Needs Food!)

Romantic Morning Delight: Start your day with Love-Struck French Toast with Berries and Sweetheart Strawberry Smoothies.

Sci-Fi Breakfast Bytes: Enjoy Galaxy Pancakes with edible glitter paired with Alien Green Smoothies.

Thriller Twists: Keep your taste buds on edge with High-Stakes Hash Browns, crispy and with a spicy kick.

We all need snacks, and there is nothing better than themed snacks. Detective Donuts and Mystery Muffins are perfect choices. Use a muffin mix and add mysterious extras to each one so you never know what you’re going to find. For the romantics, nothing beats heart-shaped cookies smothered in pink or red icing!

Lit Life Fun Ideas

Collaborative Email Stories

Start a mystery, romance, or adventure story and email it to your favorite work buddy, your BFF, or a member of your family. They add a few lines and email it to someone else (just make sure to keep everyone CC’d). By the end of the day, you’ll have a fabulous collaborative story.

Mystery Book Swap

Encourage your bookish colleagues to wrap a book they enjoyed and don’t mind giving away. Put all the wrapped books in a basket and everyone gets to pick one at the end of the day. Now you have a Friday night date with a new book!

Bookish Lunch Time

Lunch breaks are perfect for taking some time out and having literary fun with colleagues, friends, or family! Here are a few ideas to turn your lunch break into bookish ones.

Match the Author - Create a list of book titles and a separate list of authors. Players must match each book to its correct author within a set time. The player with the most correct matches wins.

Two Truths and a Lie - Each player states three "facts" about a book or author, with one being a lie. The others must guess which one is the lie. The person who fools the most people wins.

Book Title Scramble - Create a list of scrambled book titles and print them out. Players have a set amount of time to unscramble the letters and write down the correct titles. The person with the most correct answers wins.

Who Am I? - Write the names of famous literary characters on sticky notes and place one on each player's forehead. Players ask yes-or-no questions to figure out who they are. The first to correctly guess their character wins.
