Celebrating Stories: How National Literacy Month Inspires Communities

September is the start of Fall, and it's time for pumpkin spice and all things nice, like settling in with a great book! We are thrilled that it's National Literacy Month, a time when we can all come together to celebrate the power of books and the stories they hold. 

Imagine libraries bustling with eager readers, schools filled with the sounds of storytime, and book festivals popping up in towns everywhere. National Literacy Month hosts a treasure trove of events designed to spark a love for reading in everyone, from toddlers clutching their first picture books to seasoned bookworms on the hunt for their next great read. 

Communities across the country are coming together to celebrate National Literacy Month and inspire each other to read!

A Brief History of National Literacy Month

National Literacy Month's roots go back to 1991, when President George H.W. Bush signed the National Literacy Act into law on July 25. This act was a significant step toward improving literacy across our country, providing federal funds to support programs that help both children and adults develop their reading skills.

Literacy organizations like the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) and Literacy Volunteers of America have also played a crucial role in advocating for greater national awareness of literacy challenges. Their efforts helped lay the foundation for National Literacy Month, which is dedicated to promoting the joy of reading and the importance of literacy in every community.

Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough that state and local governments, alongside libraries and schools, have embraced National Literacy Month with open arms. They’ve organized book readings, hosted literacy workshops, and launched reading challenges—all with the goal of inspiring more people to pick up a book and experience the magic of reading. 

Library Card Sign-Up Month

One of the biggest highlights is Library Card Sign-Up Month, where libraries nationwide roll out the red carpet (or should we say, the book carpet?) to welcome new members. This year, the American Library Association has teamed up with none other than the Transformers, encouraging everyone to "roll out" to their local library.
